Isle of Mudd Railway
Most of the projects I work on are model railway orientated and this page will document the Isle of Muss railway project.
The isle of Mudd is a 7mm Narrow gauge layout (0-16.5). This current version has been planned as an exhibition layout so it built in 1200 x 450mm modules.
I am trying to scratchbuild as much as possible, this includes the track and controllers as well as the rolling stock and buildings. A lot of these are designed and either 3D printed or machine on a small 3018 CNC milling machine.
The initial model is a station based over 2 boards with a 3rd board used as a staging area with a 5 track traverser. I do have room for a few more modules but as scratchbuilding takes so long I have designed the layout so extra sections can be added later.
As I work thorugh the different updates of the layout I hope to be able to produce tutorials on the various parts as required.
Isle of Mudd Railway - December 2023
This month has been pretty productive with 3 new baseboards being build... at the cost of the CNC motor getting destroyed. I also managed to get a couple of coaches and a couple of wagons finished as well as a new tram loco.
The tram loco sits on a modified and DCC controlled Hornby 0-4-0 chassis from the Smokey Joe type locos.
The loco has directional headlights and tail lights as well as firebox flicker.
As well as the loco I finished a couple of 3D printed Van I'd been working on.
The final bits of rolling stock this month was a couple of 3D printed coaches I finished.
The final result was a whole new trains worth of stock.
Part 1 introduction - 24/11/23
This is the current state of the layout, most of the track is built and down. At the far end the traverser can be seen.
At the moment I am testing all the trackwork before ballasting. Today I was dealing with two issues.
The first was the track on the carriage shed base.
I was having some issues with the flanges of my test loco touching some of the glue that holds the rail in the machined out slots in the pasticard base.
It took a bit of time to clean off the excess but this is vital before putting the building on top.
The next issue was with the traverser. Although it worked perfectly when built the cold weather has caused alignment problems as the cold has caused the drive rod to contract a small amount. hard to see but it's about 0.5mm out of alignment so I had to update the programming code and add a couple of adjuster buttons so that I can update the settings as temperatures change.
The traverser board is fairly simple, just an Arduino controlling a stepper motor and a photointerrupter to index it.
As can be seen in the image they sit under the baseboard so that they cannot be accidentaly knocked. I used capacitive touch switches as they have no moving parts to go wrong and are low profile.
